Access to healthy food is something that food banks appreciate; it’s also something that they’d like to see become the norm for everyone in the province. That’s why the Edmonton Food Bank started their own seed bank. Their goal is to collect fruit and veggie seeds that can be distributed to groups in the community to make it easier for every and anyone to access fresh and healthy sources of food. And they’ve shared some of those seeds with us, to share with you!
Recognizing that classroom budgets are limited, the Edmonton Food Bank has donated packs of vegetable and flower seeds for you to use in your classroom!
The seeds are now available in our Tool Shed for you to order. They are 100% free and are bundled in packs of 10. They include:
Again, these seeds are being offered at no cost to members of AMA’s School Garden Studio—however, it’s the Edmonton Food Bank’s hope that their generous gift will inspire schools to consider sharing any produce grown from these seeds with their own local food banks.
Although food banks don’t normally ask for perishable items, they do still appreciate fresh produce donations. It’s best to reach out to your local food bank in advance to confirm if and how they’d like to accept any donations your school garden might be able to make.
If you order any of these seeds, we’d love to hear how your class is using them and if you’re able to connect with the local food bank in your area. Let us know by posting about your experience in the Community or by emailing a quick note to school.gardens@ama.ab.ca.
Note: These free seeds are available while quantities last.
